Palmerston Bowls Success

This has been a fantastic year for Palmerston Indoor Bowls Club, Fareham. Their Mens team won the Hampshire Bramley Bowl trophy last month, but now their Ladies team has gone one better by reaching a National Finals competition in the Vivienne Trophy.

On Thursday 30th March 2017 the Ladies, accompanied by a coach load of lively supporters, went to Melton Mowbray to play a team of Ladies from Lincoln. Lincoln were no strangers to the National Finals of this competition having won it previously and had a reputation for being competitive. Palmerston by comparison are a relatively new club having been formed 20 years ago, but they are a flourishing club with 800 playing members and 250 social members.

Halfway through the game, Palmerston found themselves trailing to the experienced Lincoln side, but they never gave up and gradually began to overhaul the Lincoln team. In a tense finish, Palmerston held their nerve and finished up winning the game 61 shots to 55.

The Palmerston team was Marilyn Hales, Daphne Blackburn and Janet Mudd (skip) who lost their rink 12 – 17, Maggie Evans, Sylvia Austin and Marilyn Williamson (skip) who won 19 – 11, Daphne Walton, Wynn Small and Janet Chinn (skip) who won 17 – 16, Jill Cook, Mo Browne and Maureen Holloway (skip) who won 13 – 11.

The trophy was presented to the Palmerston Captain Maureen Holloway by Mike Andrew, the President of the English Indoor Bowling Association.

This was only the second time that any of the Palmerston team had ever played at this level of competition and the second time a National Title has been won by the club and there were hints of a few tears being shed as the trophy was presented. What a way for the club to celebrate its 20th Anniversary this year!
